The Social Mask

In this play “the social mask” is very important. What is this mask you might ask, well my understanding of a social mask is that it is something we hide behind to blend in and to fit with the modern society.  An example of this in Tartuffe is that Tartuffe himself has a “social mask” for almost the entire play.  His mask displays that he is a wonderful religious man and would never hurt a fly, as we know this isn’t true and therefore this is considered a “social mask”

The Theme of Deception

April 30th, 2008 | Uncategorized | No comments

As you know from my previous posts or if you have read the play, deception is a major recurring theme in Tartuffe.  Tartuffe himself is the prime example of this and is the master of deception by tricking Orgon into believing that he is a virtuous man.  Tartuffe the play is often referred to as “Tartuffe or The Impostor” which i believe might even be a better name for the play to truly show that Tartuffe is an impostor!

Orgon……wow

hey guys! ok so I’ve decided that i am completely frustrated with Orgon.  Not only does he completely get deceived by Tartuffe and follow him as a religious leader, but when his close friends and family try to explain to him what Tartuffe is doing he is still completely oblivious and will not believe that his friend is tricking him.  Orgon is letting Tartuffe live in HIS home and treats him better than his own family, only to be deceived and lied to by this very person. WOW Orgon!  Your pretty stupid. hahaha! well yeah anyway that’s how i feel about Tartuffe taking advantage of Orgon.

Hypocrisy

In this play hypocrisy is a very prominent feature.  Tartuffe himself is a true example of this. he is always trying to look like a great man and when in reality he uses this “image” to trick people into doing things for him.  He also has the effect of being friends with a leader of a church group. He speaks to him and convinces him of something and then he tells his entire church group.  This is the way that Tartuffe exclaims hypocrisy in that he tries to look all peaceful and loving when in fact he uses people and tricks them.
